Elements of an Epic

  1. An epic is a long poem, usually about a hero.
  2. The hero will make a long journey.
  3. The hero will make many mistakes.
  4. Supernatural forces such as gods, goddesses, and/or monsters are actively involved in the storyline.
  5. The Muses may be asked or invoked to help the poet tell the story. This is called the Invocation of the Muses.
  6. The hero will visit many settings or places. For example, Odysseus travels to many islands and places on his quest to get home.
  7. Special objects or weapons with long histories may be involved, such as The One Ring from The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
  8. The use of patronymics or talking about people in terms of who their father is. For example, Zeus may be called the Son of Cronos and Odysseus may be called the Son of Laertes.
  9. The use of epithets to refer to people. For example, Zeus may be called Cloud-gatherer Zeus or Zeus the Thunderer.
  10. The hero is extremely strong.

This year you will read an epic called The Odyssey by Homer.
