Grammar

The Eight Parts of Speech

1. Noun:  a person, place, thing, or idea

Examples: Terrell, Aliceville, desk, honesty

2. Pronoun: takes the place of a noun

Examples: he, she, it, her, him, you, I, we

3. Adjective: describes a noun or pronoun

Examples: The hungry boy.

Hungry describes the noun boy.

Note: There are three adjectives that we refer to as articles. They are the words “a”, “an”, and “the”.

4. Verb: shows action

Examples: sprint, jump, grab, scream, dodge, climb, sing

5. Adverb: describes a verb or another adverb

Examples: The girl quickly ran. Quickly describes the verb ran.

6. Preposition: gives a direction

Examples: around, up, over, under, through, of, on, across

7. Conjunction: connects

Examples: and, or, but

8. Interjection: exclaims

Examples: Ouch! Hey! Hurry!
